You will need to practice burning up a dozen or so welding rods making "blobs" of welds. It is a good idea to
practice making these small welds first before you try to start laying a weld bead.
Once again get the arc going, but this time hold it in the one spot for a few seconds
(2-3sec) then stop.
The idea is just to get the feel for the welding arc burning. Do enough of these small blobs
of weld untill you feel comfortable with the process.
In the video below I did about half a dozen small welds. Use a thick chunk of steel for
practice as you won't burn through. The bit of steel in this video is about 10mm or 3/8" thick.

Once you have done that. You will need to hit the slag off of the weld.
I just used a hammer.
You should end up with something like this.
If you have followed along with my instructions properly and are confident with striking
an arc, you will now be ready to lay your first weld bead.
Once again, use a thick chunk of steel. Use a 2.5mm or 2.6mm (3/32") E6013 rod, set you
welder to 70amps.
Basically all you have to do now is "connect the dots", so to speak. That is instead of
making five or six blobs of weld make one long continous weld.
Arc welding tip: Keep the welding rod straight up or on just a slight angle
towards the direction of travel.
